Pre-Conference Announced - "HEY TEACHER, WALK A MILE WITH MY FAMILY!" - A POVERTY SIMULATION
Bring new understanding to your program by experiencing the day-to-day realities faced by low-income families. In this highly interactive 2½-hour simulation, you will experience four 15-minute “weeks” as a member of a family that must make ends meet while paying for groceries, rent, child care, and education. How does a family stay together and safe under extreme financial, social, and legal pressures? Take part in this eye-opening experience and see for yourself why we need afterschool programs in low-income neighborhoods, and why your students need you!
Workshop attendance is limited to 100 participants. To secure your spot, please fill out THIS FORM. Use "RSVP" as the Subject and select "Poverty Simulation" under Category.
WHAT RESEARCH IS SAYING ABOUT AFTERSCHOOL…
“Focus on academic achievement is producing heated debates among after-school practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. Should after-school programs be required to have a positive impact on academic outcomes? Will such an expectation crowd out other important goals and turn after-school programs into an unappealing version of the school day?”
— After-School Programs and Academics: Implications for Policy, Practice, and Research, ABSTRACT
The Society for Research in Child Development recently published the report After-School Programs and Academics: Implications for Policy, Practice, and Research. This highly recommended report focuses on those key questions, which are of concern to all afterschool practitioners.
Excerpts from the brief of the report include:
… the best after-school programs actively involve young people and feature project-based activities that can last many weeks, are not limited in ways that constrain school-day class schedules, and use the community as a resource and site for activities. (p. 2)
… good programs are driven largely by students, focus on improving interactions between young people and staff, include on-site and continuous staff development, and have explicit goals. (p. 2)
