21st CCLC Students Create Their Very Own Online Newspaper
The Roughrider Chronicles, an enriching online newspaper club, is a star activity at Center Intermediate School’s 21st CCLC program. About twenty-five students work with two teachers to produce The Roughrider Chronicles. Kids divide up tasks and research topics of interest on the Internet, then draft stories, edit each other’s work, and use their Web skills to get their newspaper up and running online.
For the Chronicles, kids write stories about afterschool events, the school day, and community events. The newspaper’s content includes a calendar of Center Intermediate School activities, entertainment links, a photo section, and a section of “cool links,” which contains a vast list of outstanding websites for kids, teachers, and parents as well.
The Shelby County website and the Center Independent School District websites host links to The Roughrider Chronicles, promoting the 21st CCLC afterschool school program and serving as an avenue for showcasing its work to a broader audience. By creating this online newspaper, kids learn about teamwork while enhancing their writing skills, computer skills, and Web skills. As technology paves the way to the future, this is clearly a great enrichment activity!
